    A responsive pictographic type design project to foster universal communication.

    Picto is a speculative universal communication tool housed in a font file. Using ligatures and variability it automatically converts words to symbols to create an accessible international language. Inspired by Blissymbolics, an ideographic writing system developed by Charles K. Bliss, Picto makes visual language responsive and immediate. For the scope of this project I created three functioning sentences, one animated with variability. Music by Mietze Conte in the introductory video above.

    The letters, figures, and punctuation are all designed following the research and methodology outlined by Olivia King in her Inclusive Sans typeface project. (This site is set in Inclusive Sans as mentioned in my footer.) Said project was executed with the goal to make type more accessible on a structural level. The font itself is based on Mundial by TipoType.

    The icon set follows the same visual system as the letters with circular shapes and rounded terminals. A conceptual system, largely tied to parts of speech, began emerging when designing the visual hierarchy and relationships between icons. For example the most complex icons are nouns, and the simplest are prepositions and conjunctions.

    The icons are animated in the same way you would adjust the weight of a variable font.
